Replacing/Fixing an Axle
If you notice excessive shakiness on your Chameleon's video feed while driving, the Chameleon may have a bent axle, which can be caused by a high impact event such as dropping the car or accidently stepping on it.
Check to see if the Chameleon's wheels move freely - if the wheels appear to wobble when spun, then follow these steps to check and repair the axle. Ask an adult for assistance!
Steps to follow:
- First, pull the front wheel directly away from the Chameleon until the wheel separates from the axle, while supporting the steering linkage with your opposing hand. It may take a bit of force - be careful not to bend the axle.
- Second, with the wheel removed, clear any debris wrapped around the axle pin.
- Third, lift on the control arm and rotate the axle to free the tire assembly from it. This will allow you to remove the axle pin and examine it.
- Fourth, check the axle pin. If it is bent, you can use pliers or similar tools to straighten the pin.
- Fifth, once straightened, reinsert the pin to the wheel assembly, ensuring that the flat end of the pin is facing upwards when the camera is pointing up. Push up on the steering control arm and rotate the wheel assembly back into place.
- Finally, reattach the wheels. We recommend using a light tool such as a pen, pencil, small screwdriver or pair of tweezers to assist by inserting the tool behind the axle pin. While holding the axle pin in place, gently push the wheel back onto the axle, and be careful not to over-tighten it.
Now, check that the wheel is able to move freely. If it does not, you may have tightened it too much and will need to gently pull on the wheel to loosen it.
